Welcome Back to a New School Year
Dear Students, Families, Staff, and Community Members,
Welcome back to another exciting school year in the Okanagan Similkameen School District. It is always a privilege to begin this journey together, and I am grateful for the strong partnerships that support the success of our students.
In SD53, we are committed to ensuring success for every learner. We value inclusion and diversity, and we work hard to make our schools places where students feel safe, have a sense of belonging, and are well prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world.
As education continues to evolve, we are introducing opportunities this year for students to learn about artificial intelligence in age-appropriate ways and to explore how to use it responsibly. To guide this work, the district has developed an SD53 AI Guiding Principles document SD53 AI Guiding Principles, along with a Parent Permission Form for students aged 13 and older. Schools will manage these forms and communicate with families as this important learning develops.
As a district, we are also focused on strengthening communication and collaboration between families and schools. To support this, we have created a Guidelines for Positive Communication document Guidelines for Positive Communication. In addition, recognizing the critical role that consistent attendance plays in student success, we have developed Attendance Information for Parents Why Student Attendance Matters. Schools will continue to reach out promptly to families whenever attendance concerns arise. We appreciate your support in instilling the importance of regular attendance.
As we begin the year, I am energized and optimistic about the positive learning experiences and growth that lie ahead for our students and staff. Thank you for the ongoing support you provide to our schools and our district.
With appreciation,
Marcus Toneatto
Superintendent of Schools
